Birth citizenship
Under the longstanding rule described in State Department 8 FAM 302.2, people born in the Northern Mariana Islands on or after 4 November 1986 acquire US citizenship at birth under Covenant section 303. Check the rules, court orders and parental-status exceptions effective when applying.
Nationality and travel documents
Your home country may have its own rules on nationality for children born abroad, including whether dual nationality is recognised and what travel documents are required. Confirm the child’s status, passport options and any declaration or choice requirements with your country’s competent authority.
Travel and social benefits
Passport entry arrangements change by destination. Visa-free entry is not permission to work or settle. A Social Security number alone does not confer benefits; health coverage and pensions have separate eligibility and contribution requirements.
School and university
US public primary and secondary schools generally do not charge tuition, subject to residence, district and age requirements. University admission, aid and in-state tuition are assessed separately; citizenship does not guarantee admission or a fixed discount.
Working in the United States
US citizens generally do not need a work visa, but licensing, age, qualification and security requirements may apply. A child’s citizenship does not give parents work authorisation.
Obstetric and childbirth care
Arrange the receiving hospital, obstetric clinician, pain-relief options, insurance and self-pay scope separately. Available delivery methods depend on medical assessment and the provider’s services.
Accommodation and local resources
Review housing, food, clinic access, transport, local medical resources and referral arrangements. A comfortable environment does not itself mean lower medical risk.
Schooling after returning home
Check your home country’s entry rules for compulsory schooling and any documents needed for a child born overseas. University admission as an international student is assessed separately and may include nationality, passport duration, overseas residence and institutional requirements.
Immigration for parents
A US citizen aged 21 or older can petition for parents. This immediate-relative category is not subject to an annual visa quota, but application, financial sponsorship and admissibility requirements remain; permanent residence is not automatic.
