IVF — in vitro fertilisation

Eggs and sperm are combined outside the body, and an embryo may later be transferred into the uterus. A clinician considers the cause of infertility, previous treatment and examination results.

IVF may be discussed for tubal problems, some ovulation or sperm factors, or unexplained infertility after other treatment. Ask which alternatives remain appropriate.

Risks and treatment outcomes

Discuss ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, cycle cancellation and the possibility of no usable eggs or transferable embryos. Compare live-birth rates using the same denominator; a positive pregnancy test is not a live birth.
